Let's begin!

You can either drag and drop your image in Photoshop, or you can go to File > Open and select the image you want to edit. In this example, I clicked the file from my Recent files since I’ve opened it on Photoshop recently.

Much like the previous Photoshop course on How to Remove Background (in case you missed it, check it out!), you will use the Eraser Tool to simply remove the background. In this exercise, we will be putting Richard (SHOUTOUT TO RICHARD HUTCHINS!) on a new background.

When you resize your background image, it is good practice to hold down ‘shift’ to make sure you do not stretch the image; by holding ‘shift’, the image will scale proportionately. Hit ‘enter’ when you are finished.

Once you are happy with the background image placement, click and drag the background layer underneath Richard’s layer to move it to the back.

Click on the Adjustment icon at the bottom of the Layers panel and select Gradient from the drop-down menu to bring up the Gradient Fill window. Click the gradient (as marked in the 2nd photo) to change the color and opacity of the gradient.

Double-click on the little black square icon to enable the color drop-down icon. Once it appears, you can click it to bring up the spectrum. (see next page)

After you have Converted to RGB colors, you can double-click the foreground color to choose a different color; you can choose a gradient too by selecting the middle icon which activates the gradient effect. Have fun with it!

Play with different gradients by repeating steps 5-7! Try out different angles in the Gradient Fill pop-up.

Save your work by going to File > Save As (or hold down ‘shift’ + ‘command’ + ‘S’) and save it to your computer.
